Who you work with

James Saunders · Founder & Principal Consultant

Thirty years in medical devices. Still learning.

I have spent my career at the commercial end of this industry — building brands, developing products, entering markets, working with distributors and generating results. Not advising on how it might be done in theory.

That experience runs across wound care, ostomy, continence, skin health and nutrition, in more than thirty countries, for some of the industry's most recognised names and for entrepreneurial businesses with everything to prove.

Med Dev Services works with a limited number of clients at any one time. That is deliberate. It keeps engagements focused, confidential and commercially meaningful — and it means you deal with me, not a team you have never met.

What we do

Five places where experience changes the outcome.

Every engagement is built around a commercial question. These are the areas the questions usually fall into.

01

Market strategy & growth

Where to play, and how to win

Market entry, prioritisation and opportunity assessment, positioning, pricing and portfolio strategy — grounded in how these markets actually behave rather than how a model says they should.

  • UK & EU market entry
  • Opportunity assessment
  • Positioning
  • Pricing
  • Channel design

02

Market access & reimbursement

Getting adopted, reimbursed and retained

The commercial realities of the NHS and the Drug Tariff, value-based procurement, evidence strategy, and the business consequences of regulatory change — including Part IX reform.

  • UK market access
  • Part IX Drug Tariff
  • Value-based procurement
  • Evidence strategy

03

Partnerships & distribution

The right relationships, properly assessed

Distributor identification and assessment, partner search, OEM and private label, supplier sourcing, and support through the meetings and negotiations that decide whether a partnership works.

  • Distributor search
  • Partner assessment
  • OEM & private label
  • Deal support

04

Product & portfolio development

From market opportunity to commercial product

Product sourcing and own-label development, NPD support, market research and customer insight, go-to-market planning and lifecycle decisions — including what to stop selling.

  • Product sourcing
  • NPD
  • Customer insight
  • Go-to-market
  • Lifecycle

05

Market insight & real-world evidence

Evidence that earns its keep

Real-world insight from practising clinicians — built to satisfy post-market surveillance obligations and to tell you something you can act on commercially.

  • Post-market surveillance
  • Real-world evidence
  • Clinician research
  • Market research

Evidence should do more than satisfy a regulatory requirement. It should help a business make better commercial decisions.

Capability

Med Device Academy

Experience is most valuable when it is shared.

Consultancy solves the problem in front of you. Capability stops it recurring.

The Med Device Academy takes the same three decades of commercial experience and puts it into a structured programme for product management and customer-facing teams — so your people understand the UK market, the NHS, pricing, evidence and tendering as well as your advisers do.

It is a supporting asset, not a separate business. Most clients meet it after a consultancy engagement, when the question becomes how do we do this ourselves next time?

PM Academy
Fourteen modules for product managers across commercial mastery, market access and stakeholder management.
UK MedTech Essentials
For sales support and customer service teams who need a proper grounding in the NHS and the UK market.
Team & company licences
Multi-seat access with activity reporting and scheduled one-to-one sessions.

Start a conversation

Tell me what you are trying to work out.

No obligation, and no expectation that you already know exactly what you need. Most useful engagements begin with a thirty-minute conversation about the problem.
